Wind and turbulence measurements by the Middle and Upper Atmosphere Radar (MUR): comparison of techniques

چکیده
The structure-function-based method (referred to as UCAR-STARS), a technique for estimating mean horizontal winds, variances of three turbulent velocity components and horizontal momentum flux was applied to the Middle and Upper atmosphere Radar (MUR) operating in spaced antenna (SA) profiling mode. The method is discussed and compared with the Holloway and Doviak (HAD) correlationfunction-based technique. Mean horizontal winds are estimated with the STARS and HAD techniques; the Doppler Beam Swinging (DBS) method is used as a reference for evaluating the SA techniques. Reasonable agreement between SA and DBS techniques is found at heights from 5 km to approximately 11 km, where signal-to-noise ratio was rather high. The STARS and HAD produced variances of vertical turbulent velocity are found to be in fair agreement. They are affected by beam-broadening in a different way than the DBS-produced spectral width, and to a much lesser degree. Variances of horizontal turbulent velocity components and horizontal momentum flux are estimated with the STARS method, and strong anisotropy of turbulence is found. These characteristics cannot be estimated with correlation-function-based SA methods, which could make UCAR-STARS a useful alternative to traditional SA techniques.

Simultaneous observations of tropospheric turbulence from radiosondes using Thorpe analysis and the VHF MU radar
This paper deals with the detection and quantification of refractivity turbulence in the troposphere from radiosonde and very high frequency (VHF) band radar data. Balloon data processing methods based on Thorpe sorting and recently developed by Wilson et al. (2010, 2011, and 2013) can be applied for a direct identification of turbulent layers from the in situ profiles. The VHF band mid and upp...
متن کاملOn the effect of moisture on the detection of tropospheric turbulence from in situ measurements
The present paper addresses the detection of turbulence based on the Thorpe (1977) method applied to an atmosphere where saturation of water vapor occurs. The detection method proposed by Thorpe relies on the sorting in ascending order of a measured profile of a variable conserved through adiabatic processes, (e.g. potential temperature). For saturated air, the reordering should be applied to a...
متن کاملTurbulence parameter estimations from high-resolution balloon temperature measurements of the MUTSI-2000 campaign
Turbulence parameters in the tropo-stratosphere are analyzed using high-resolution balloon temperature measurements collected during the MUTSI (MU radar, Temperature sheets and Interferometry) campaign which took place near the Middle and Upper atmosphere (MU) radar (Japan, 35 N, 136 E) in May 2000. Vertical profiles of the specific dissipation rate of turbulent kinetic energy, ε, and turbulent...
متن کاملStrengths and limitations of MST radar measurements of middle-atmosphere winds
Radars have been used successfully for many years to measure atmospheric motions over a wide range of altitudes, from ground level up to heights of several hundred kilometres into the ionosphere. In this paper we particularly wish to concentrate on the accuracy of these measurements for winds in the middle atmosphere (i.e. 10±100-km altitude). We begin by brie ̄y reviewing the literature relatin...
متن کاملVHF volume-imaging radar observation of aspect-sensitive scatterers tilted in mountain waves above a convective boundary layer
Thin stable atmospheric layers cause VHF radars to receive increased echo power from near zenith. Layers can be tilted from horizontal, for instance by gravity waves, and the direction of VHF “glinting” is measurable by spatial domain interferometry or many-beam Doppler beam swinging (DBS). This paper uses the Middle and Upper atmosphere (MU) radar, Shigaraki, Japan as a volume-imaging radar wi...
